After creating the terrain I began working on some art assets for the game, I started with the pillars that are needed, I first started on researching and talking to my teammates about the style of the pillars they were thinking of.
Once I got the style plan for the pillars I got straight to work, I had reference images up while I worked on the first pillar and the first one came out really well and had that finished on the Monday.
As I finished the first one I started working on the other 2 pillars, I continued on with trying to finish the models and then on the Wednesday I managed to finish them both, I showed Lorne to get a second opinion on all 3 of them but he said they were too high poly which they were, they were around the 70,000 poly mark so I begun deleting edge loops upon edge loops until I worked them down to less than 1,000 polys.
I went back and fixed all of them and then I started on duplicating the main pillars and begun cracking, breaking and taking out chunks of the pillars for 3 different types of a single pillar to have variation in the levels and level design.
I continued on with the cracked and broken pillars for the rest of the week, I finished them on that Friday and had all 9 of the pillars I created under 1000 polys getting ready to chuck into zbrush.
But before I went into zbrush I had completely forgotten about UVing each mesh, So over that weekend I went into Maya and just started to UV the original pillars, I knew as I went along that the UVing would be troublesome towards the other 6 pillars, once I had finished the 3 original pillars I spent the rest of that day working on the UV’s for the other pillars and I just couldn’t seem to crack it unfortunately.
I came back the next day and I remember Lorne saying that he’d rather have an automatic UV than one that takes longer than a day, so I set the rest of the UV’s to automatic and cleaned them up so all the similar pieces were stacked and they just looked tidy, So I finished up that day with all the pillars UV’d and I got them ready for next week where I will chuck them into zbrush to add more texture to them.
